An Eye for An Eye Will Only Make the Whole World Blind - Outsourcing America - Communism, NPA and a New President
Politics in the Philippines Since 2001
Since President Gloria Arroyo came to power in 2001, hundreds of people have disappeared. There are claims the military targeted those viewed as a threat to the government. Some have called the Arroyo government similar to the Marcos regime with it's martial law.
More journalist have been killed in the Philippines during this time than any other country in the world. I investigating this I discovered the Al Jazeera new network has done more perhaps than most western news agencies to expose these killings
Most of the disappearances have been linked to members of two groups. Either the New Peoples Army, a group listed as a terrorist organization by the United States or the Communist Party. Communism has all but disappeared throughout most of the world, but in the Philippines it is alive and well thanks for the most part to the severe poverty which provides a fertile place for it to grow.
The following is an excerpt from an Al Jzeera news program
A New Aquino Elected May 10, 2010
Like in 1986 when the Marcos regime fell, the Arroyo government is yielding power to an Aquino, son of Corazon Aquino who became president when Marcos was toppled. Ninno Aquino was elected by the people on May 10 and is currently undergoing confirmation by the Philippine Congress. Most Filipinos reportedly believe a government without corruption is not achievable regardless of who holds office, but Aquino won with 43% of the vote and promises many changes to the Filipino people including not moving into the presidential palace, but instead continuing to live in his family ranch estate where he had been living with his mother Corazon Aquino, the former president, until her death last year.He is 50 years old and has never been married which bothers some. Others see it as a sign of intelligence in a country where over population is a big concern.
One change he has promised to seek concerning the United States is to change the current policy of US Servicemen who commit crimes on Philippine soil. Currently they are handed over to the US Embassy. He believes they should be tried and punished in the Philippines.
We will return tomorrow with more as we work toward our Friday conclusion of this series on
