An Eye for An Eye Will Only Make the Whole World Blind - Outsourcing America - Death Squads
Finding Out the Truth
I was only in Devao on business. My passport was issued as a tourist. While that made getting my passport easy it would not be possible to get access to do any kind of investigative reporting. Actually, at the time I was focused on my employees and it was only after I returned when I went into my investigative mode. Regardless I would have had no access to anyone with authority in Devao. The taxi driver I talked to seemed totally convinced the mayor's office was behind the killing of the street kids and whether it was true or not I could tell he believed it. I waited until I was back in the US before I started asking questions. Something told me a westerner asking questions about the death squads might draw attention I didn't want. I figured it was better to be safe.
When I did began my investigation it didn't take long. I soon found this report filed by an AlJeezera reporter.
So What Does This Have to Do With Outsourcing?
It is really simple. Even with 40% of the country living in poverty there are more college graduates in the Philippines than there are skilled jobs requiring their services. Many college graduates, especially men, can not find the work they are trained for and end up taking lower paying jobs that could be filled by the unskilled and untrained who are in poverty. Every job created in the Philippines, regardless of the skill level, helps bring those children who are dying at the hands of death squads a little closer to a better life.
As westerners we look at the $60,000 a year jobs we have lost and the benefit packages that have been cut. Those are important issues, but in the Philppines where college graduates often make less than$2 an hour there is an even bigger problem . . . a devine one at that.
Tomorrow we will look at the role the Catholic Church has played in the Philippines overpopulation problem.
