Bob Dylan A Complete Unknown In Long Beach, NJ

Walking In Rain - No ID - Questioned by Police

Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp have been touringnationally. In late July they were getting ready to play aconcert near Long Branch, NJ. It was around 5:00 pm whenDylan decided to leave Willie and Mellencamp back at the tour buses andgo for a walk . . . in the rain . . . without an ID.

Willie has been known to smoke marijuana on occasion as proclaimed byToby Keithwho co-wrote I'llNever Smoke Weed with Willie Again.

So it is entirely possible our hero Dylan may have been stoned when hestepped out into the rain in this impoverished shoreline community andstarted peeping into the windows of unoccupied houses.

Approached by two police officers in their early 20's he is asked toidentify himself. He responds "Bob Dylan."

"Could we please see your ID?" they request.

He replies, "I left it back at the bus."

"Why are you looking into the window of a vacant house in the rain?"the policecontinue.

Hey, would you like to make a deal?

Dylan is soaking wet . . . in the rain . . . without an ID .. . being questioned by two Long Branch police officers who don'tbelieve they are talking to a legend . . . trying to explainhe is not a homeless vagrant looking through the window of a vacanthouse in a town with
      • Median age of 35 years. (Dylan is 68)
      • Median household income of $38,651. (that's annual,Bob, not a night)
      • Population density of 6008 people per square mile.(Dylan???)

How does it feel

How does it feel

To be on your own

With no direction home

Like a complete unknown

Like a rolling stone?

This eventually turned out pretty cool with the two peace officerssafely takingDylan back to his bus where he produced his identity. In thespirit of a White House suds summit I wonder if Dylan, Willieand Mellencamp invited the two public servants in for a beer .. . or some of Willie's private stock?

CNN version of this story is here.
